We’ve recently learned in late 2024 that Port Phillip Prison in Truganina (situated in south Laverton in outer western Melbourne in Victoria) where Julian Knight has been incarcerated since 2005, is set to be permanently closed down in 2025.
We understand that this closure is a Victorian state Labor Government decision as part of its policy to roll out the reassignment of prison management of its state prisons away from private contractors and back to being controlled and run directly by the state government. We consider this a positive move in light of the various problems exposed out of a number of various state government enquiries into privately run prisons across Australia.
Port Phillip Prison has been a privately run prison operated by London (UK) based corporation, G4S. So, this means that prisoner Julian Knight (an extrajudicial political prisoner of the Victorian Parliament) is set to be relocated from Port Phillip Prison elsewhere to a government-run prion in Victoria sometime soon.
Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security rate prison, however, Julian Knight after having served out his imposed criminal sentence of 27 years (1987-2014), then a further 11 years (2014-2025) as a political prisoner of the Victorian Parliament; given his exemplary behavioural record throughout his incarceration of now 38 years, has been officially declassified from a ‘maximum security’ ranking down to a ‘medium security’ ranking.
