Editor’s Note:
In early 2008, a Melbourne academic researcher going by the name of Leone Delaney, set up the website entitled ‘Julian Knight – The Hoddle Street Massacre‘ at URL: http://julianknight-hoddlestreet.ca/ It was active from at least 2008, but after some years the content was not updated and by late 2017 it has since become defunct.
We read that website during the period when it was active. It was the start of something investigative and academic, rather than opinion. Thank you Leone. We are grateful to the author for having taken the time and effort expended to document part of this unique story, and particularly for bravely in the face of media criticism and the plethora of hateful biased media that blanketly and naively regarded Julian Knight as an evil mass murderer. The website had started off on a different tangent to seek to understand the Why? about the Hoddle Street Shooting Spree and to consider the more complex and back story of Julian Knight being a victim of ADF abuse and scapegoat in the six months serving at Duntroon immediately prior.
In recognition of this website research work done by ‘Mrs Leone Delaney, Ph.D?’ (with her husband’s support), we herein on this webpage reproduce the content of that website from 23rd March 2016.
In some cases, we have elected on our website https://julianknight.com.au to instead reallocate some records to separate webpages under our different multi-menu structure – in which case we respectively provide internal hyperlinks on this webpage. We also then provide at the end of this webpage, some of our own comments, analysis and conjecture to readers.
Including this website’s records of Leone Delaney, we consider contributes to the factual account of Julian Knight’s backstory so as to better explain and understand the story of Why? and to appreciate the bigger picture, the ongoing story. This is way beyond the media bias and ignorance out of poor research on their part. Media articles are mostly in print, long now dated and restricted readability access behind paid subscription firewalls anyway. Paparazzi profiteers and media attention in this matter since 1987 has long waned nearly four decades on. So have the Radio shock-jocks like Neil Mitchell who also began on Radio 3Aw in 1987.
Whereas this website https://julianknight.com.au since 2001 serves to holistically tell the entire story and analyse the Why? with scholarly wisdom freely and globally to anyone interested and not otherwise informed. We trust that Leone’s will be pleased to learn that this website morphs the trailblazing ‘Julian Knight – The Hoddle Street Massacre‘ website where it left off and in perpetuity.

‘About This Site
This site has been created to operate as a complimentary information source to a book I am in the process of writing. My book is about my journey to understand the crime of mass murder. My interest in this subject developed as a result of living in Melbourne Australia during the time the Hoddle Street massacre occurred in 1987. I was 16 and shocked by the breaking news on the evening of 9th August 1987.
In the days that followed we learned that the perpetrator was a 19 year old discharged army cadet who went on a killing spree that seemingly had no rhyme or reason. During the months leading up to Julian’s sentencing I spent my time at the State library researching the information that flowed from the media.
Shortly after Julian was sentenced in November 1988 I wrote a letter to him indicating that my attempts to understand his actions were difficult and impeded by my limited knowledge, mostly fed by media accounts.
This began a mutual correspondence that still exists today. I have been in contact with Julian via mail, telephone and prison visits for the last 21 years. Over this time I have not only gained extensive knowledge of the crime of mass murder from an academic perspective, I have learnt much about myself and my ability to apply tolerance and understanding in adverse personal circumstances.
As a victim of violent crime since knowing Julian personally, I can honestly say that such an event in your life forever alters it. There is something lost when a person violates your rights and your sense of who you are. Can you ever get back what you had? I say no. You can’t go back because you are not the same person. You are changed. In my experience, it is what you do with the path your life has taken that will determine who you become, not the act that was committed against you.
It is my goal and my hope that, by writing and publishing my book “The Knight That Changed Our Lives” that I can share what I have learned personally and professionally about Julian and the crime of mass murder.’

“The website (the domain http://julianknight-hoddlestreet.ca/ registered in Canada, was created by myself and my husband as a ‘teaser’ for a book I am writing. The purpose of the current content on this site is to be a ‘filler’. As the project progresses, the site will evolve to contain chapter summaries, a public forum and research materials relating to the crime of mass murder in general and to the Hoddle Street massacre specifically.
This is a project that I have invested many years in. It was born as a result of being denied by the Victorian Office of the Correctional Services Commissioner the ability to conduct research on this case as part of a Masters program I was enrolled in during 1999-2002 in Melbourne.”
[Editor’s Note: This website was subsequently reported in Melbourne’s The Age newspaper which claimed it as a “prank or hoax”… http://www.theage.com.au/national/hoddle-street-killers-chilling-web-prank-20080814-3vbv.html . We have reproduced that article on this website, and for reader convenience we provide the following internal hyperlink to that webpage].
In response to that article, the website’s author, Leone Delaney, wrote the following explanation and disclosures on the website:
‘The author of this website wishes to advise viewers that this site is not a ‘hoax’ or a ‘prank’ and was not instigated by the subject of the site, Julian Knight.
The site was created by myself and my husband as a ‘teaser’ for a book I am writing. The purpose of the current content on this site is to be a ‘filler’. As the project progresses, the site will evolve to contain chapter summaries, a public forum and research materials relating to the crime of mass murder in general and to the Hoddle Street massacre specifically.
This is a project that I have invested many years in. It was born as a result of being denied by the Victorian Office of the Correctional Services Commissioner (OCSC) the ability to conduct research on this case as part of a Masters program I was enrolled in during 1999-2002 in Melbourne.
Apparently it is the belief of the OCSC that my research with a surviving mass murderer has no benefit and can shed no light on the nature of this crime or what we as a society can do to prevent such tragedies.
Since failing to gain approval in 2001, there have been at least 17 similar incidents of mass murder worldwide, one of the most recent being the Virginia Tech mass murder in 2007 where Cho Seung-hui took the lives of 32 people.
So many lives are directly and indirectly impacted by the act of mass murder. I took it upon myself, at age 17, to write to Julian Knight in 1988 and inquire as to why this happened. I have been in contact with Julian for the last 20 years, barring a period of 3 years in the 1990’s when Julian refused contact with me as a result of another person’s book being written about him without his consent, and a brief communication ban placed on me by the Office of Corrections until I agreed to discontinue any academic research efforts.
I make no apologies for my association with Julian Knight. My motivation for pursuing this research has not wavered from the night I heard the news about this tragedy the same as everyone else. This is my attempt to understand these crimes. I have never once been asked by Julian to do anything to further his public image good or bad. He has never interfered with my research and has only commented when asked.
I haven’t done anything wrong. I have never committed a crime and the only contact I have had with the criminal justice system has been as a victim of violent crime. It saddens me that people can try to make me feel guilty, heartless or crazy because I am trying to gain insight into the nature of the crime of mass murder.
I expect to receive negative responses to the project I have undertaken. I welcome constructive criticism. I do not expect to be threatened, harassed or manipulated as a result of this project (All of which I have been subjected to so far).
If you would like to make comments or ask questions please feel free to use the comment section of this site. A public forum is due to be added to this site in the near future.’

‘Other Pseudo Commando Mass Murderers
Mass murder in general is defined as offences in which five or more victims are intentionally and unlawfully killed by a single offender in a single incident. This definition does not have a cut-off point in regard to distance but the arbitrary cut-off point for time is 24 hours.
Pseudocommando mass murderers can be defined as those mass murderers who intentionally and unlawfully kill five or more non-relations (i.e. strangers or workmates) with a firearm or a number of firearms in a single para-military style raid.
Although mass murders committed with firearms have occurred since firearms were invented, pseudocommando mass murderers are a rare phenomenon. Since 1945 there have been dozens of incidences of mass murder in every region of the world. There has, however, been an increase in the late 1980s. Although every region of the world has had incidences of pseudocommando mass murder, the United States of America has had by far the greatest number of incidences of this type of offence, particularly in the states of California and New York.
Even though the statistics relating to these offences and to the perpetrators varies greatly, some general observations can be made. The average number of victims for these incidents is 11 killed and 9 wounded, with a range of 5 to 35 and 0 to 30 respectively, and with a range of total casualties of 5 to 53. These incidents also tend to occur during the hours of 6am-6pm, on a day falling within the range Sunday to Thursday, and most often during the months of July, August and September.
Psuedocommando mass murderers tend to be male paranoid loners, aged between 22-47 with a mean age of 35, who are white, single and have a preoccupation with firearms with a corresponding background in the military or law enforcement. They also tend to commit their raids after long deliberation and then either force the police to kill them in a shoot-out or they commit suicide at the conclusion of their raids. The weapons used by these individuals are most often semi-automatic rifles – especially the AK47 military assault rifle – or semi-automatic pistols. It is also common for a combination of weapons to be used.
The following is a list of 43 cases of pseudocommando mass murderers which gives the following information – if known – for each case: name of perpetrator, age of perpetrator, date of incident, location of incident, number of dead and wounded and the fate of the perpetrator.

Our Comments, Analysis & Conjecture:
(1) We surmise that the author of this website, Leone Delaney (was not her real name – since it is misspelt), and no less is a woman of Melbournian, since she states she was aged 16 in 1987 and in Melbourne at the time of the Hoddle Street shooting spree.
(2) Based upon the Melbourne’s The Age newspaper’s article, her website ‘Julian Knight – The Hoddle Street Massacre’ was active in 2008. Our research shows that content was not completed and became abandoned for years until ultimately being made defunct in late 2017.
(3) She says she felt compelled “research on this case as part of a Masters program I was enrolled in during 1999-2002 in Melbourne.” We posit that it may have been a PhD research thesis undertaken at La Trobe University in Melbourne, one of the few universities in Melbourne that offered postgraduate PhD courses at the time; others being Monash University and the University of Melbourne. The latter is situated just 2 km west of Clifton Hill where the Hoddle Street Massacre occurred. Perhaps Leone had attended University of Melbourne and had lived near Clifton Hill in 1987.
(4) Perhaps ‘Leone’ was a witness, or even a victim, of the massacre of sorts. She does confess on the website that she “has been as a victim of violent crime“. She also states that “I am trying to gain insight into the nature of the crime of mass murder.” May be she is closer to the massacre that she reveals. This is all conjecture of course.

(5) Leone states on her website that the website is an output of her research. For perhaps concerns about Australian website controls by the regulator auDA and to maintain publishing independence and anonymity, the website domain was created in distant Canada, so allowing for anonymity. This would make sense given that columnist Peter Gregory of The Age in 2008 was critical of her website, claimed it to be as a “prank or hoax”… http://www.theage.com.au/national/hoddle-street-killers-chilling-web-prank-20080814-3vbv.html. We also doubt whether its author, claiming to be Leone Delaney was in fact Canadian. Rather, we suspect being an Australian of Melbourne, and probably still is.
(6) By 2017, the website had become defunct, perhaps since she had finished her Master of Laws research course and written her 50,000 word thesis (book) ‘The Knight That Changed Our Lives’, authored in her real name. Her age appears consistent at least. In 2008, Leone would have been aged 37. We have not been able to find any published records of this book. The simplistic style of the website would suggest it was active from 2008, when website were still a relatively new technology. Click on our internal link below to our replication of that article.
(7) Also, perhaps co-incidentally we note that there was a ‘Leon’ at La Trobe University in 1999. This was the same year as Leone Delaney started her research into the crime of mass murders. In 1987 Leone was aged 16 she says, so by 1999 she would have been aged 28 – an ideal age to have graduated in Law and be tackling a post-graduate PhD – likely at La Trobe University. A tree on campus commemorates Leon Capraro, who was the bar manager of the La Trobe University Union when he was shot and killed in 1999.
“In August 1999, a student at the university walked into the Eagle Bar at the Bundoora campus armed with a revolver and shot and wounded a young woman before shooting bar manager Leon Capraro, 49, killing him instantly. He then attempted to shoot at others but was restrained by staff until police came and arrested him. The killer was thirty-eight-year-old Jonathon Brett Horrocks of Inverloch in Victoria’s southeast. Brett, as he was commonly known, had been sacked from his job at the bar in February of that year for allegedly stealing alcohol. He was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 23 years.”
