The Hoddle Street killer is appealing a decision dismissing his claim for compensation for alleged abuse he suffered while a cadet at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in Canberra.
Julian Knight is currently serving a life sentence for the 1987 Melbourne massacre, in which he killed seven people and injured a further 19.
But Knight argued it was the abuse he suffered at Duntroon that led him to commit the infamous crime, and he should be eligible for compensation under the ACT Criminal Injuries Compensation Act.
In December last year, ACT Supreme Court Master David Mossop dismissed his application for compensation. Master Mossop found the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction to hear his arguments, and agreed with the ACT Government that it is only the Magistrates Court that could deal with the matter.

Today, Knight told Supreme Court Justice John Burns (that) he was applying for an extension of time to bring his appeal because he had been waiting on the outcome of other court matters, and had missed the deadline. Knight, who is representing himself, also has a claim against the Commonwealth for compensation over the alleged abuse. The matter will return to court in July.
