How the ‘ADF Email Porn Scandal’ unfolded (from media reporting) …
So various reports indicate that this Email Porn Scandal episode was conceived and started back in 2010 by some sex-starved male commando in the Army. Not too many women are commandos, so its a tad male environment only and culture to boot. Accused names are out there published in the media, so no need here to drag those accused again through the mud. The individuals involved, else actually in truth, many not involved yet were still implicated in Morrison’s ‘moral’ witch hunt without investigation or judicial process.
Such individuals sharing dodgy emails are not really important. Moreso important is the ADF culture condoning it all for 4 years (2020-2013) until some unidentified ADF inside whistleblower ultimately went to the police and to the media in 2013. More than likely the whistleblower was a female victim in one of the porn videos out there after having first reported the problem to her ADF superiors, but was told to shut up or else. Also, the timing of the publicity was [co-incidentally?] during the ADFA Skype Sex Scandal.
It is unclear from whom the Porn Email Scandal emanated, but various ADF personnel were involved, including from mainly Army serving personnel and junior trainees at the Australian Defence Force Academy – mostly in Canberra and all male. Yet, the porn email indulgent prank was anti-female sexist, probably known by the ADF brass at ADFA and Duntroon and elsewhere with the ranks of the ADF. Yet it was not exposed by the ADF for four years (2020-2013) until June 2013 when the media was informed.
Well, what’s new in the ADF?

Much was then also kept under wraps by the ADF for fear of its recruitment reputation damage. But the ADF has long had such reputation damage. It is an institutionally damaged institution.
13 June 2013: News of the scandal is leaked to the media (undisclosed) and publicised in The Australian national newspaper:
It seems that the scandal was first reported publicly in The Australian newspaper thus:
“Over 100 defence force [ADF] personnel have been embroiled in a damning new scandal over the distribution of thousands of derogatory and explicit emails using defence computer systems since 2010”. [SOURCE]

14 June 2013: ADF in urgent reputational damage control – enter Chief of Army PR task force:
<<Army chief David Morrison has issued a stern warning to personnel after it was revealed that dozens of members were involved in the distribution of hundreds of explicit emails denigrating women. >>

That video [while it still exists online, at this moment]:…Army chief David Morrison has addressed defence personnel in a video uploaded to YouTube, telling sexist troops “to get out” and “find something else to do”. [SOURCE]
Now, Morrison had admitted back in 2013 (finally exposed) that an investigation into this ADF scandal was in train so he used that excuse to say publicly to the media that therefore he could not comment. Yet comment he did (see above). It was because the porn email actions of a select ‘group’ of internal ADF males the whistleblown had became a national scandal across Australia.
It is the media on the outside reporting, hello! The scandal had brought the ADF into disrepute. Really? As if it wasn’t already! So Morrison was ordered by Canberra politicians to do an ADF PR damage control exercise and to blabber on about maintaining military moral standards?
Morrison did so as a political activist and was duly rewarded by then Prime Minister Malcolm (a Teal) Turnbull (2015-2018) as ‘Australian of the Year’. For what?
What ADF complicity, cover-up, and political shenanigans?
Meanwhile, during Morrison’s email porn witch hunt…
14 November 2013: Army sacks six members of ‘Jedi Council’ [SOURCE]
<< The Army has sacked six soldiers at the centre of the notorious “Jedi Council”, whose members swapped grossly demeaning emails about women they’d slept with. [So payback for the embarrassment caused agaim to the ADF?]
Five months after the scandal came to light, the Chief of the Army, Lieutenant-General David Morrison announced in a statement on Thursday night that the ringleaders had been dismissed.
The Jedi Council members circulated video and images of women with whom members of the ring had slept, along with demeaning commentary that included personal information about the women. Police sources have said that other members were challenged to try and have sex with the women. The women are understood to have been filmed without their knowledge.
Three of the sacked soldiers are still facing possible criminal prosecution by New South Wales police. Of the 17 main members of the ring – who include several officers – a further seven may also be sacked. The remaining four “have been the subject of, or are facing, administrative sanctions”, General Morrison said.
He also revealed that a further 172 soldiers – most of whom are Army members – received at least some of the emails, though appear not to have been directly involved. Disciplinary action is being considered against those soldiers. General Morrison said that the six soldiers who have been sacked ranged in rank from sergeant to major and include both Regular Army members and reservists.
“The Australian Army is overwhelmingly an organisation of 44,000 talented and professional men and women, who serve their country with pride and distinction,” General Morrison said. “The standard of behaviour we expect of our serving members is clear.”
General Morrison received widespread praise for his palpable anger over the affair, including a steely video presentation in which he told sexist male soldiers to “get out” of the Army.
However Defence has also faced questions over the length of the investigation. As Fairfax Media reported in June, Defence first learned of the Jedi Council in September 2010, but General David Morrison and other top brass, as well as then-Defence Minister Stephen Smith, were not informed until April this year. The Jedi Council episode is one of a string of embarrassing scandals for Defence, which has undergone major reviews into its internal culture in the wake of the Skype affair of 2011.
Defence announced last week that (an) Army cadet, who filmed himself having sex with a fellow cadet and streamed it via Skype to his friends, had been kicked out of the Australian Defence Force Academy. >>
So getting away with this Porn Email Scandal from 2020 likely legitimised the ADFA Skype Sex Scandal of 2011. The culture pervaded.
25 November 2013: ‘Army Commando Arrested’
[SOURCE]
<< A former Army employee allegedly involved with the so-called Jedi Council has been charged with sending pornographic emails to his Defence Force colleagues. The group known as the Knights of the Jedi Council swapped footage of sex acts they carried out, without the women involved knowing. They also attached demeaning commentary to the sexually explicit images.
Today [the named commando], 40, was arrested after attending Queanbeyan Police Station near Canberra with his lawyer.
He has been charged with six counts of using a carriage service to cause offence. He told waiting journalists that he intends to clear his name.
“All I can say is I understand, acknowledge and respect the media’s right to report on these things. It will be dealt with in a court of law.”
It is believed [ the named commando] is one of six members of the army sacked 10 days ago for their involvement with the Jedi group. The group allegedly distributed hundreds of pornographic emails in 2010. About 90 other people, predominantly from the Army, have been implicated in the scandal. >>

A New South Wales Strike Force was established in mid-2012 to investigate the emails allegedly exchanged between three ADF personnel, all of whom have since left the force.

A 41-year-old man came into North Sydney Police Station today, where he was arrested and charged with use of a carriage service to cause offence.

23 Aug 2014: ‘Soldiers claim they were used as scapegoats in the ‘Jedi Council’ internet sex scandal’
[SOURCE]
<< Two soldiers sacked over the Australian Army’s so-called “Jedi Council” internet sex scandal say there were used as scapegoats in a bid to stamp out sexist behaviour in the ranks. It’s been revealed the pair tried to kill themselves after they were dismissed for “contrary” conduct, News Corp reported.
The “Knights of the Jedi Council” was an email group that shared degrading emails about women in 2013.
It’s now believed there was actually only one member in the “Jedi Council”, with most of the other men dragged in as they received and replied to emails.
[The] Commando pleaded guilty to three charges of using a carriage to cause offence.
Army Chief Lieutenant General David Morrison had a very public response to the “Jedi Council” revelations, releasing a YouTube clip which was applauded by all sides of the gender equality debate.
But the two men, who don’t wish to be named, have claimed they were not given due process or the opportunity to speak to Lieutenant General Morrison.
“He was quick to end our careers and ruin our lives, but he didn’t have the decency to eyeball us,” one ex-soldier told News Corp. “I take full responsibility for the stupid comments on my emails, but I should have got a kick in the pants not the loss of my career.” >>
18 December 2014: ‘Jedi Council’ military sex scandal victims read impact statements in court sentencing of former commando
[SOURCE]
[The named commando] (at age 41 pleaded guilty in August to three charges of using a carriage to cause offence. (ABC News)
Two women have described how their lives were turned upside down by the military’s so-called Jedi Council sex scandal. The pair read victim impact statements at a sentencing hearing for the group’s ringleader, [the named commando].
The 41-year-old former commando pleaded guilty in August to three charges of using a carriage service to cause offence.
One of the women, who cannot be identified, said she was so humiliated she underwent counselling and was forced to work part-time after being targeted by the group. She was named in sexually explicit and degrading emails sent by [The named commando] in July 2010 to 12 other men, including 10 serving members of the Australian Defence Force. The recipients included a lieutenant colonel and a lance corporal.
“I now struggle to function in most aspects of my life,” she told the court. “He used me, violating my privacy. “I’ve lost over a year of my life.”
[The named commando] secretly filmed himself having sex with another woman and emailed several still images with demeaning captions to his military mates.
The woman told the Downing Centre District Court she suffered from anxiety and depression and was “haunted by the words used to describe me”. She described [the named commando’s] actions as “calculating and predatory” and said she would “not go down as one of the victims exploited by an army officer”.
[The named commando] told the court he took full responsibility for his actions and admitted that filming and disseminating the details of his sexual encounters was a clear breach of trust.
In September 2010 his then employer, defence contractor Thales Australia, conducted an internal audit and found some of the emails. [The named commando] was sacked on the spot. He told the court: “On paper, it was gallows or black humour. I was not aware of the legality, I guess you could say, of the offences.”
[The named commando’s] barrister Jack Pappas said his client had sought help from three psychologists since 2007. “This man’s mental health was a major contributing factor in his offending,” Mr Pappas said.
A clinical psychologist appearing for the defence, Dr Kenneth Byrne, said [the named commando], had a personality disorder with narcissistic features. When asked whether [the named commando] would have realised the impact his action had on the women, Dr Byrne said: “He would have had some awareness, but in a limited way.”
He said it was unlikely that [The named commando] would re-offend.
Crown prosecutor Peter Neil, SC, said [the named commando’s] actions were clearly calculated. “When we look at the captions on the photos, the degrading language in the emails, this was done to boost his self-esteem,” Mr Neil said. “It undermines not merely standards of morality, it is truly criminal.”
Last year, the ‘Jedi Council’ scandal led to multiple sackings within the defence force. [The named commando] was arrested and charged in November 2013, despite earlier being cleared of wrongdoing in a Defence investigation. Two other members of the sex ring faced charges but they were dropped. [The named commando’s] sentencing will continue in February.
9 February 2015: ‘Jedi Council’ ringleader who shared photos of sex acts facing correction order’
[SOURCE]
<< A Sydney judge says he doubts a former soldier who was the central figure in the so-called Jedi Council sex ring feels genuine remorse for his actions.
[The named commando] pleaded guilty in August after he secretly filmed himself having sex with a woman and distributed photos of the encounter.
The former commando turned reservist emailed several graphic photos to 12 other members of a group calling itself the Jedi Council in July 2010, the court heard.
[The named commando] has been described as a central figure in the group, which included a lieutenant-colonel and a lance corporal.
In the emails, [The named commando] referred to himself as “the Wolf of Woolloomooloo” and described women he slept with as “sluts” and “moles”.
He also bragged that anal sex with a woman was “like you’ve stolen her soul”.
On Monday Judge Paul Lakatos described the captions in the emails as “tasteless” and “belittling”, and also described the Jedi Council’s name as a “puerile and unimaginative reference” to Star Wars.
During sentencing in the Downing Centre District Court, Judge Lakatos said the offences were more serious than the so-called Skype scandal of 2011, when a Defence Force Academy cadet secretly filmed himself having sex with another cadet.
In August, [The named commando] pleaded guilty to three counts of using a carriage service to cause offence after his lawyer conceded that three of six emails sent by his client were objectively offensive.
Three other counts of the same charge were dropped.
A former special forces signaller, [The named commando] told the court he took full responsibility for his actions and admitted that filming and disseminating the details of his sexual encounters was a clear breach of trust.
He said he had struggled to find a job since the scandal broke and was forced to work part-time packing boxes at night.
But Judge Lakatos said [The named commando’s] actions were calculated and doubted he was genuinely remorseful.
[The named commando] will remain on bail ahead of another hearing next month, when he will be assessed for a possible intensive correction order, which means he may not serve a full-time jail sentence.
[The named commando’s] actions ‘calculating and predatory’
[The named commando’s] crimes came to light when his former employer, defence contractor Thales Australia, conducted an internal audit and uncovered some of the emails.
He was sacked in September 2010, while six other members of the Jedi Council were also eventually sacked by the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
[The named commando] was arrested and charged in November 2013, despite earlier being cleared of wrongdoing by an ADF investigation.
Two other members of the sex ring faced charges but they were dropped.
The revelations further exposed the dark side of the military’s male-dominated culture.
The publicity surrounding the scandal forced army chief David Morrison to declare that those involved had “brought the Australian army into disrepute”.
During sentencing submissions in December, two women – the one who was depicted and another who was named in the emails – described how their lives had been turned upside down.
One told the court she suffered from anxiety, depression and described [The named commando’s] actions as “calculating and predatory”. >>

27 March 2015: Wolf of Woolloomooloo escapes jail time

<< Former army officer [The named commando] sent degrading emails about women and his sexual exploits. But he won’t be going to jail.
A former army officer who sent degrading emails about his sexual exploits with women has escaped jail time.
Instead, the man who called himself some “Wolf of Woolloomooloo”, was handed a 15-month suspended sentence and ordered to be of good behaviour.
[The named commando’s] was charged with three counts of using a carriage service to menace after he sent a series of emails in 2010 to colleagues who were part of an “adolescent boy’s club” called the “Jedi council”.
In one sent to four Australian Defence Force (ADF) email addresses, [The named commando] included images of a woman whom he had secretly filmed while having sex with her.
Describing her as “Melbourne Mistress/Melbourne Mole #5”, he told the group he would no longer be able to email as regularly as his wife was about to give birth.
Two days later, [The named commando] sent an email titled “interesting menu” with photographs of a female senior officer whom he expressed interest in having sex with.
On Friday, Judge Peter Lakatos confirmed his 15-month term of imprisonment, but suspended it on the condition he be on good behaviour and hand over $2000 as security.
It comes after the court heard [The named commando] saw the sexual exploits as “having notches on the board” and likened anal sex to “stealing a woman’s soul”.
In a sentence hearing earlier this year, one of his victims described the toll his actions had taken on her.
“Women are not objects for you to play around with,” she told the court.
“You don’t own us, you don’t take our bodies, you don’t take our minds.”
[The named commando], Sydney’s District Court heard, felt he was “acutely unattractive as a child” and, following a “severely disrupted” upbringing, had joined the army at 16.
He went to Afghanistan, but did not see combat there and left the ADF in 2009.
At the time of his offending, he was employed as a defence force contractor and was in the army reserves. >>

<< [The lieutenant-colonel] was relieved of his command after it emerged he had been sent an email – which he said he did not open – from the infamous “Jedi Council’’ ring of soldiers who allegedly distributed material detailing sexual encounters on the defence email network.
[The lieutenant-colonel] yesterday broke his silence on the matter, demanding to know why Mr Morrison could sack him but continued to serve himself.
…Mr Morrison subsequently delivered a YouTube speech denigrating the army’s male-dominated culture. The video received more than 1.5 million views and paved the way for his reputation as a champion of gender equality. In January he was made Australian of the Year and has since used that honour to campaign for gender equality.
He has at times drawn controversy for his comments about the issue, including his assertion the word “guys’’ should never be used to describe a group that included women.
Catherine McGregor AM, a former lieutenant-colonel and current News Corp columnist, said [The lieutenant-colonel] had been delivered an “egregious injustice”. “I believe he is owed an apology by the former chief of the army, David Morrison, and the current chief of the army,” said Ms McGregor who wrote Mr Morrison’s famous YouTube speech..
“I have spoken directly with more than one two-star general who agreed with me about this and said an appalling injustice has been done. I am now utterly disillusioned having served under him and I regret accepting his invitation to serve as speechwriter. He has forfeited my respect and the respect of those in the army. Formal recognition of what has happened to Mr Dubsky has to happen. In my view this man has been damaged on salacious grounds and it behoves the ADF to sort this out.”
Retired Townsville infantry platoon sergeant and Medal for Gallantry recipient Justin Huggett said he would like to see Mr Morrison apologise to Mr Dubsky.
“If a true leader makes a critical error in judgment that leader should be ready to make amends,” he said. “I think General Morrison made a terrible error in judgment in the Jedi Council saga. He cut a very wide net that affected a lot of people. I wouldn’t be using my time to attend a leadership lecture from the man until he changed a few very important things about his leadership mentality. He’s made a very bad mistake which has hurt people and an apology is well warranted.”
23 November 2016: ‘Defence failed to cooperate with its investigation’ …. now who’d have thought?

<< A leaked New South Wales Police report says Defence failed to cooperate with its investigation into the so-called Jedi Council sex scandal.
The confidential document obtained by the ABC also said the office of former Army Chief David Morrison knew of the scandal 11 months before he went public with his now-famous speech condemning those involved. >>
“According to the 120-page police document “the findings that the Chief of Army was not briefed in August 2012 are simply not supported”, although the current Australian of the Year has always maintained he only knew of the affair shortly before he made the allegations of vile online behaviour public.
The report from the NSW Strike Force CIVET also cited “serious concern about the integrity and methodology of the Inspector General Australian Defence Force Report”. The report reveals some of the men targeted were not as involved as first thought.
…The confidential NSW Police report states “Defence Investigators – In a statement, Defence rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing. Defence said it believes no apology was owed to the former lieutenant-colonel.”>>
22 June 2017: ‘Jedi Council scandal inquiry hits dead end’
[SOURCE]
<< A [federal] parliamentary committee examining an internal defence investigation into the so-called ‘Jedi Council’ sex scandal has come to a dead end.
A Senate committee examining claims of a botched internal defence investigation into the so-called “Jedi Council” sex scandal has put the matter in the too-hard basket.
Members of the council comprised army officers and other personnel who allegedly produced and distributed offensive material and imagery, including filmed sex acts, on the defence email system.
The offences dated back to 2010 and came to light in mid-2013. They were uncovered following a series of defence sex scandals. Some members were discharged and disciplinary action taken against others, with the alleged ringleader handed a suspended jail sentence.
Last December, the [federal] Senate noted a NSW Police ‘Strike Force CIVET‘ report that alleged Defence’s (ADF) investigative service deliberately lied, withheld evidence and fabricated information in its investigation of the Jedi Council.
The Senate defence committee tabled its report in the upper house on Thursday and said in the absence of evidence to substantiate the allegations, the committee was not in a position to undertake further scrutiny of this matter. It had been unable to establish the status of the confidential report because NSW Police wouldn’t hand it over. A copy was leaked to independent Senator Jacqui Lambie but parts were blacked out [aka ‘redacted’].
“Collectively, these factors made it difficult for the committee to proceed with the inquiry as it was unable to assess the evidence raised in submissions and establish the provenance of versions of the CIVET report referred to in evidence,” the committee said.
It acknowledged evidence received was conflicting and incomplete with the potential to further harm the reputation and well-being of individuals.>>
